The book of Job has many similarities with the history of the people of Israel. Job was a righteous and devout man of heart, and who lived safe and calm, and was the favorite of God, but many unforeseen misfortunes came together, and so Job with great anguish and sadness gave his complaint against his creator:
"I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer;
I stand up, but you merely look at me.
You turn on me ruthlessly;
with the might of your hand you attack me.
You snatch me up and drive me before the wind;
you toss me about in the storm" Job 30:20-22.
When the Assyrians arrived and devastate the Kingdom of Israel, and the Babylonians the Kingdom of Judah, also like Job, many prophets, like Jeremiah or Isaiah, wondered why the creator who had a pact with his people punished them in that way, the wisdom of men cannot explain all the facts and the story of Job repeated itself.
In spirituality everything begins with the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity), and faced with the insufficiency of reason and wisdom, this is the only answer. Ethics in man, in the old testament is summarized as follows: "Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
We cannot, Elihu advises to his friend Job in the last speech, judge God, and attribute the origin of evil or error, the creator is beyond everything:
"How great is God—beyond our understanding!
The number of his years is past finding out" Job 36:26
Like most of the prophets, eloquently Elihu continues his speech, and so he speaks of the greatness of God and how unfathomable are his eternal designs:
"The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power;
in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.
Therefore, people revere him,
for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?" Job 37:23-24.
Job teaches us with this that being correct is not a guarantee that no misfortune will happen to us, we must be people prepared to face both the good and the bad in life; because as Ecclesiastes says: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens" Ecclesiastes 3:1.
