Great Performances - A trip through some amazing musical memories # 7: Hazel O'Connor - Will You (The one I listen to when I need sax!)

in greatperformances •  7 years ago  (edited)

This 'Great Performance' comes from the soundtrack of 1980 British movie 'Breaking Glass' and is performed by its star, singer-songwriter Hazel O'Connor.

The problem with doing this 'Great Performance' series is that I actually sat down and started this about 2 hours ago, but then I get on the YouTube train, start listening and watching and clicking links and the next thing you know it's midnight again, which leads me nicely into the fact that this song is really a late night song and a story that tells of the fumbling nervousness and anticipation preceding a young couples first night together.

What makes this song rather unique though is the fact it's kind of in 2 halves. The first telling the story before leading into a stunningly atmospheric sax solo which you just never want to end.

Hazel O'Connor is not your archetypal pop princess. She actually started out as an actress and moved into music which straddled the chasm between Punk and New Wave. She was angry and raw.

She came to prominence with the movie 'Breaking Glass', a story of the pitfalls of the music business for which she wrote all the music and from where this track comes. I could have chosen 'Eighth Day' or 'D-Days', both great tracks in their own right, but it's the uniqueness of 'Will You' and its measured yet emotional delivery that puts it on my list.

Interesting Fact #1 - Hazel O'Connor was the first singer to perform on Top of the Pops in a bra when she performed D-Days in 1981

Interesting Fact #2 - One of the producers of Breaking Glass was actually Dodi Fayed, the very same boyfriend of Princess Diana

It's now midnight, so switch of the lights, turn up the volume and let your mind open to this hauntingly beautiful track.

And enjoy the sax!

You drink your coffee,
I sip my tea,
And we're sitting here, playing so cool,
Thinking, 'What will be, will be.'
And it's getting kind of late now,
Oh, I wonder if you'll stay now,
Stay now, stay now, stay now,
Or will you just politely say 'Goodnight'?
I move a little closer to you,
Not knowing quite what to do and I'm
Feeling all fingers and thumbs,
I spill my tea, oh silly me,
It's getting kind of late now,
I wonder if you'll stay now,
Stay now, stay now, stay now,
Or will you just politely say 'Goodnight'?
And then we touch, much too much,
This moment has been waiting for a long, long time,
Makes me shiver,
Makes me quiver,
This moment I am so unsure,
This moment I have waited for,
Well is it something you've been waiting for,
Waiting for too?
Take off your eyes,
Bare your soul,
Gather me to you and make me whole,
Tell me your secrets,
Sing me the song,
Sing it to me in the silent tongue.
It's getting kind of late now,
I wonder if you'll stay now,
Stay now, stay now, stay now,
Or will you just politely say 'Goodnight'?

Bom Bom Bom, bom bom bom bom bom bom..................
