1821: Kalamata becomes the first Greek city to be liberated from the Ottomans.

1897: The Ottomans slaughter and burn villages in Chania, Crete. The violence lasts for two days and spreads to other cities on the island. About one hundred revolutionaries gather in Akrotiri, determined to unite Crete with Greece, whatever the cost.

1973: Greek politician, Eleftherios Gonis dies.
