812: Byzantine Emperor, Staurakios dies.

976: Basil II, the Bulgar-Slayer, is proclaimed emperor of Byzantium at the age of 18. His brother, Constantine VIII is co-emperor.

1055: Theodora becomes empress of the Byzantine Empire.

1930: Kostis Palamas becomes president of The Academy of Athens.

1944: The British Royal Air Force bombs German occupation targets in the city of Piraeus. The city sees 5,500 casualties from the 3-hour bombing run.
