The prophet Isaiah described at the beginning of his book the fall of the Kingdom of Israel, and how the Kingdom of Judah had been left alone. But the Lord's judgment on this last kingdom would not be long in coming. Faced with the increasing influence of the Babylonian empire in the Middle East, the Kingdom of Judah put its trust in military alliances and set aside the pact with God.
Faced with the prevailing corruption, the prophet Isaiah denounced that greed brings the misfortune to man. To those who trust in apparent goods, sooner or later some great evil will come to them, because the apparent goods are scarce and also the object of disputes between men; this is a warning that we constantly observe in all the books of the Bible.
This is how the prophet Isaiah expressed in an oracle, how the ruin of the Kingdom of Judah was near:
"The LORD takes his place in court;
he rises to judge the people.
The LORD enters into judgment
against the elders and leaders of his people:
´It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people
and grinding the faces of the poor?´
declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty" Isaiah 3:13-15.
And then, similar to the Gospel of Luke, Isaiah pronounced six misfortunes, which begin with what is perhaps the most important, the misfortune of greed, that is, the idolatry of money: "Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the land" Isaiah 5:8.
Greed along with fear are the main motivators of sinful behavior in man, and greed is extremely destructive because it can never be satisfied. Greed makes us enemies of God and our neighbor.
And that is why those who cultivate this sin receive their retribution, as Isaiah told us about the sins of the kingdom of Judah:
"Therefore the LORD's anger burns against his people;
his hand is raised and he strikes them down.
The mountains shake,
and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets.
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised" Isaiah 5:25.
