Greta said something true when she was 15, "You say you love your children above all else ... and yet you're stealing their future in front of their very eyes."
Climate change is the existential threat that she was directed to speak about. But the debt-based economic system being used to fight climate change is just as destructive.
Debt =/= Climate change
This kid definitely has us thinking and it is an important discussion.
If the banks worked sincerely to eliminate debt and only allowed new debt for environmentally sustainable projects, that would be good ummmkay.
In Canada green party adopted social justice as one of 5 key mantras, but I believe you are talking about economic debt.
People will destory the Earth because it's the only way in our economy and it has been happening since a while ago.

Only because the notion of private property has been so undermined.

I've thought about fairer schemes for the distribution of public (tax/government) resources like universal basic income.
What is your take on that?
Private property is difficult to maintain when the atmosphere and the oceans have become a dumping ground for stuff we don't want on our property.
In many places you don't own the air, water, mineral or fossil/oil resources on your property. You are basically only in possession of the surface and highly restricted to how much you can change this.
Something to think about is the climate scientists in the antarctic or up in space. The amount of resources required to sustain their activities compared to the average human is immense. Is it worth it? Definitely not always. We owe most research funding to the competition of capitalism or opposing world views. It is difficult to get funding if you don't dance the dance they want you to.

Here's what I did. I performed a search on "walter block pollution" because I happen to like Walter Block's economics philosophy and I know he's thought a lot about the concept of "externalities," like you're alluding to. I am not just asking you to watch a video as if it's my own thought. I haven't seen this video before. I'm watching it right now, and I know he'll say something sensible:
Will you watch it also? Believe me, I am not suggesting that he is the authority on the matter. I am not making an appeal to authority. I am just asking you to consider this point. Whatever it is, because I haven't watched it yet. But I will now.

That was an interesting story. I had no idea why the fundamental legal shift in private property rights occurred. It seems to have happened just around the time that the civil war in the US was inevitable. It's sad to think that it is a result of the state wanting more power to decide who does what. Or at least that was my take on it.

― Lysander Spooner, No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority
My belief is that if we can somehow restore private property without relying on government, I think that will simultaneously fix the environment.

I would suggest that the "debt-based economic system" you're talking about is only as destructive as it is because up until now, there was a large gap in the actual accounting that the 'free market' has been providing. The costs to move society forward have largely been ignoring the environmental debt that has been accrued. Like any other capital projects or long-term strategies, if you do not account for something and then realize further along down the line that it turns out to be apparently be explicitly required in order to move forward, it's going to cost a lot more than if you had just kept up with maintaining it.
Rather, if we had progressed forward through the last 30~50~80 years with a solid balance between industrialization/economic-progress and environmental sustainability, these costs would have been smaller, more manageable, and less destructive (at the time they were being implemented).
However, it seems as though NOW, the bill for the last two to three generations of not investing in sustainable environmental practices has come due. It feels destructive, because we're standing on a pile of poor accounting that largely ignored the foundation of everything it rests upon -- a stable environment and all the sustenance that it provides.
But what do I know... I'm just a guy in civil engineer in Canada.
EDIT: I just remembered why I came here. I was flipping through the SPS proposals, and remembered about your Steem Documentation proposal. Wanted to know how it was coming along, and if there was a link to some docs to check out.

It's amazing how many people are more obsessed with her than the issues she talks about. I was concerned about the state of the planet before she was born.

What do you think about the narrative of private property being undermined, leading to the "tragedy of the commons," which then leads to the current state of the planet?

I think there is no perfect system. How far do you take private property when we share the same air and water? Shitting in your own back yard affects everyone. We need some areas that nobody owns so they can be left to nature as we greedy humans cannot have everything. There is a collective responsibility for keeping the planet habitable. We need more cooperation and less nationalism. It may mean having less of some things, but most of us in the 'first world' have more than enough and it's not viable for the rest of the world to have that excess too.

What is the point you are taking from the video? We are seeing a downgrading of environmental protection in the US by Trump appointing business people to run things. Of course they will go for what is profitable. I get that countries have to be competitive, but if they work across borders they can get general improvements. The alternative is like a farting competition in sealed room where nobody wins. I worry that similar motives are behind the Brexiteers in the UK. Profits for a few at the expense of the many.

"The climate hysteria movement is not about science. If it were about science, it would be led by scientists, rather than by politicians and a Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left,"
Here you can listen to the scientists perpective. People should be able to inform themselfs, rather than falling for the globalist brainwash agenda nonsense.

LOL she is also human so how is she not guilty for climate change? Does she not also breath CO2 and use electric appliances and live off our industrialized society? Honestly living out in space to zone the earth an eco habitat and have all industry in space oneail cylinders is just going to be the end of the hegelian dialectic :)

But she says to pay the carbon taxes .. and watch her climate change movies... Embrace communist China as they don't pollute the world. Or harvest organs or reeducate Muslims, make then drink and eat bacon...
China good. Cows bad.
Dog question the government or you will end up in a pow camp. I mean on the reservation with me... It's not a concentration camp... It's your home.
