Gridcoins.org Backup / Blockchain Downloads

in gridcoin •  7 years ago  (edited)

Quick follow up,

Starting as of yesterday, each midnight, London time, gridcoins.org get's new snapshot of blockchain and published and available for download at the status page: https://gridcoins.org/status.php

This aims to provide quick sync ability, and will automatically get grayed out if, at the moment of creation, the number of blocks differs from the last known block of https://gridcoinstats.eu/status.php (That we are using to compare is we are in sync or on the fork). Therefore, I suggest downloading from status page, rather then through direct Link.

For development, a direct download link is the following: https://www.gridcoins.org/snapshot.zip

Don'g get confused with "backup - not implemented yet" as this will get's replaced with last backup time as soon as we confirm everything works correctly.

Best Regards,
S.

I understand the reasoning and the work put in and appreciate both, but in general we don't recommend anyone use an unofficial snapshot to sync their wallet due to the security issues associated with it.

The safest way to sync your wallet is to sync from zero, then a bootstrap or the official snapshot.

I totally agree with that. The current reasoning is to put unused resources into service. I got in touch with Thomas to discuss possible approaches of validating snapshots. If something comes to your mind in regards to methods of validation, drop me a note. I will try to think of methods for a validation script and do some testing. (If successful, it can be used as a mechanism in core wallet as well to offload servers with DNS round-robin or similar mechanisms).

At the moment it's not a big problem but in future it might become. I think It could be a worth having in back of the mind and have a discussion as a low priority.

makes me want to purchase a gridcoin.tld or grc. domain and throw up a site. rather had found a group of people with all the resources at hand , and I do not code other than google copy/paste preview IT WORKED! Servers just sitting idle or crunching with way more resources left for IIS/Apache/Mysql/email hosting etc... Anyways good to see your site progressing.

Why not? If you have an idea to build an interesting project related to GRC and want to use specific domain for that project, go ahead. I am sure whole team will support that.

It's all interconnected. Gridcoins.org uses @startail / @sc-steemit https://gridcoinstats.eu to check if we are in sync / not on fork. You can also use any resources of gridcoins.org for your own project. I would always support anything that GRC community will benefit from, and I'm sure others will do the same.

I think your spamming script is having problems with line breaks. Try removing "\n" from your code. Thank You :)
