Project brief (Pb) is a segment of the Gridcoin Fireside chat where I will be talking about scientific projects apart of the BOINC network.
Now this isn't some complex lecture on super-symmetric particles interacting with vacuum fluctuations, it's a simple and super fun experience in learning about what's out there and what you could be supporting with just the click of a button!
Join me live with Jringo on the Gridcoin Fireside chat at June 20th 8:00pm EDT! (Check your timezone)
Who am I?
I'm Delta! An Australian programmer, technologist, blockchain and cryptocurrency expert, and self-proclaimed physicist.
I like to communicate things to people in the simplest way possible and teach people about the most interesting things that this universe has to offer.
You can find me on Discord where I hang out in the Gridcoin chat.
What's happening this Fireside chat?
On June 20th I will be opening the Fireside chat with a short explanation of BOINC project SETI@home.
Yes, this is the great search for ET... And where his home is.
What is SETI@home?
SETI stands for the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence. In their arsenal, they have an army of radio telescopes around the world collecting noises from outer space. All those noises are then stored and then given to computers so that they can listen out for unusual stuff.
SETI@home was created in 1999 by UC Berkeley and is a BOINC project that is supported for rewarding by the Gridcoin network.
Those there are what SETI's radio telescopes look like. The reason why they are so big is because they have to detect the most weakest and most distant signals in space.
Most of what these things collect is just white noise, but sometimes they pick up blips, chirps and other patterns. When these patterns are found, it could be ET phoning home!
This is a visual representation of what your computer will be doing when running SETI@home. This is what's called a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and it basically lets computers pick up patterns in sounds and signals.
