Currently, you can directly:
- donate in Gridcoin for
- relief for Irma victims (with helpof BITTREX exchange)
- securing BOINC project PrimeGrid's existence
- BOINCstats
- BOINC Combined and
- BOINC project yoyo@home
- buy products/services in shops
- or trade on exchanges (Poloniex, BITTREX, ...)
Just to mention some of the real-world applications...
- What other things would you like to be able to do with your Gridcoins?

I would like to see a cryptocurrency donation site similar to the one Pinkcoin have created for the relief for Irma victims but instead of donating to charity have the funds automatically rained on the researchers doing scientific research.
Also, maybe have a portion of the rained funds donated to the projects themselves.

I think PoR fund is already raining on the researchers - as computing power.
Fundamental question - where the value of these rains will come from?

It would come from other cryptocurrency and it would make the price of GRC go up because of the buy pressure. What's wrong with having more compensation from donations? If the marketing message is right and people are willing to rain then what is the harm?

I'm not really criticising your idea :) I see no harm if it would be based on donations. Might not be that difficult to set up.

Gridcoin network is designed around the flow of gridcoins in exchange of computer power.
I see communities surrounding several coins donating to charities and trying to get adopted by shops. Shop adoptions have usually little success due to very low user base of the coin, high price volatility doesn't help either, but it's only a secondary cause.
I think we should only focus on development and quality of the software and build a platform for commercial projects. This way gridcoin's hardware network will grow and adoption will grow, shops etc. will come on their own if gridcoins will have an intrinsic value.
Short answer: I wish it would be possible to exchange gridcoins for computing power of my desktop.

People can already buy computing power with all the available cloud computing platforms like Google, Azure and AWS. What would be the benefit of buying computing power to use through BOINC when sensitive info is sent out to everyones machines?

I agree that sensitivity of data is one of the problems. AWS, Google is tough competition - but there was a day when Google, Amazon and Facebook were tiny. Golem team, some developers and investors believe there is space for decentralized computing services.
Where the value of gridcoins is to come from? Now it's mostly based on speculation, but like for Internet companies the bubble will end. What is the point to have just another, secondary BOINC credit (badge)?
