First dualcolor 3D gridcoin prototype

in gridcoin •  7 years ago

Last week I printed the first dual color gridcoin chip. This was a first test to see how well the printer can handle the detail I had in mind. And if not to find out if I could do something about it or if I should adapt the design.

Designing the gridcoin chip backside

And this is the result:

I was quite happy with this first result. The letters stick very good to the white core and it looks good. There are some tiny details that might be improved. The letters are not completely filled and there are some tiny holes in the border. I looked in the software and saw errors in the infill. I did some further research and after a while I noted that the ‘check for updates’ function of the software did not work. I updated to the most recent version and this is how the digital simulation looks. In the old software the yellow lines, the infill was missing in the letters. Let’s hope I didn’t miss something else and this second try looks even better.

Another idea that I didn’t design yet is to not have the letters on top of the white but have white in between the letters. That, and a dual color flip side, are the next steps.
Let me know what you think!

Would you be willing to share your 3d models? I'm interested in trying to engrave it in aluminum.

Sure. I was planning to host them somewhere anyway. Just fiddling a bit around to find something I like best. Which one would you like and what format? I use FreeCAD to design them.
