Redrawing the 3D gridcoin

in gridcoin •  7 years ago

After the first 3D print of the gridcoin I noticed the bottom of the cut out part had some 'stripes' in it. At first I didn't spend too much attention to it but over the weekend I started wondering how this was possible. The printer software decides on certain parameters which path it will follow to print and this can be looked at and influenced.

I took some time to look at how the software builds up the print and found an error. Somehow I tilted the cut out part.

The software allows to go through the layers. Viewing the slices the printer prints and then I saw this:

next layer:

See how it slowly building a sloped bottom.

I completely redrew the thing from scratch and ended up with this:

Next print should look better without the stripes.

Proud minnow, eager to grow.

You're welcome. If you have ideas just share them.

I have a full 3D model of the coin Joshoeah designed, in case you were wanting to try run that on your printer. Based on the final print, I would wager you have a Makerbot? Version 2 experimental unit?

That aside, if you would like me to run your model off our $500,000 Stratasys I am more than happy to do that. =)

It's actually an Ultimaker 3. I saw your model and I think it is too detailed. I'm willing to give it a try though. Can you send it via Slack?

The ultimaker 3 has two print heads. First I was thinking about making a coin in one color and print the support for the backside in water soluble filament. Now I'm thinking about making the coin in two colors. Print both side separately an glue them together.

It's more a fun project. As @vortac mentioned. They are more like casino chips.

What would you be willing to pay for that? You're the millionaire. I got someone else who requested the same. I know it is possible and I'm willing to look up what that would cost.
