My little SBC BOINC Cruncher

in gridcoin •  7 years ago

These 4 SBCs are some of my BOINC cruncher, which also yields some gridcoins:

They consist of:

  • 2 ODROID C2
  • 1 Raspberry Pi 2
  • 1 Raspberry Pi 3

These generate no noise and use only little power (around 5-10 W per board).

Addionally a little extra Cruncher sits in my "hard drive box" below my table:

The ODROID XU4 with 8 cores (4 big A15, 4 little A7) has some more calculation power, but therefore it needs an active fan.
The default fan has replaced by me for better cooling with less noise.

Be aware that...

Of course they offer by far note the calculation power of a "big" computer, but as they can run 24/7 they still pile up some credits over time.
You have to take a close look at which project to choose, as not every BOINC project supports these ARM computers.
All SBCs run with a Debian based Linux OS.

For better managing and monitoring this many BOINC clients I would suggest BoincTasks:

My Gridcoin story

I've come to gridcoin thanks to an ODROID forum post which catched my interest about 2 years ago, starting with one SBC.
Since then I collected some more computers for BOINC crunching... ;)
I can only recommend gridcoin because the community is very friendly and helpful to beginners.
And it is still one of the few cryptocurrencies which rewards coins for computing something useful!

So if you have some Raspberry Pi lying around, why not letting them do something useful? :-)

Nice post, @kiebitz!
I am just in the middle of setting up something similar as I have 4 Pi3s lying around here.
Do you have an extra fan behind the rack or are the heatsinks visible on the picture sufficient to keep the Pis from overheating? The screenshot looks like you're running them on 100% CPU and - I assume - all cores?
I installed one in my garage today making use of the cold temperatures and it works: No heatsinks or fan and it never goes beyond 65°C running on full power. Let's wait for the summer... ;-)
At the moment, I BOINC with it just by command line (WiFi / SSH) but I plan to put the Gridcoin wallet on it to stake 24/7. Although one gets all necessary information, I still like the feeling of a GUI wallet view so I plan to set this up too and contact it via VNC.
And just to compare it to other numbers I've read about: How many GRC/day do they generate roughly?

Thank you very much @xlm567.
Yes, the passive heatsinks are enough to prevent them from overheating.
Only the XU4 throttles a bit.
On the XU4 I had also my wallet at the beginning, but for me the wallet was much faster and reliable on a real x86 computer and so I moved it.
Combined these 5 SBCs generate around 1 GRC/day.
But I didn't optimize the project choice to maximum profitability.

nice setup!
