Gridcoin Community Hangout #041

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free, and to @cm-steem for being such a wonderful host until recently. I will be assuming hosting and moderation duties from now on, with a little help from my friends. :D

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

Where can I listen to past hangouts?

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities, and our users.

How long will the hangout last?

Anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 and a half hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steemit post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest upvotes.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Gridcoin Hangout #041 will be held on:

October 14, 2017 @ 9pm UTC.

Compare 9pm UTC to your time zone!

Way to be on top of things - BOTS, am I right ? LOL

I suggest discussing the proposed changes and eventual migration to new chain.

  • if it was already discussed, then sorry, last recording is 3 months ago.

can you come to answer questions?

if not msg me the important details on slack or post them here and we can go through them during the hangout

I was sitting at my computer trying to force myself to do school stuff at the time of 30.09. hangout. Seriously I totally forgot. I hope, and will try very hard to come to this one.
I think I will prepare notes and talk, instead of writing article.

looking forward to it = )

I suggest discussing the ad strategy . It doesn't seem very effective to target BOINC users. Most of them already know. We should try targeting science layman. The kind of guy that is just reading about SETI or about the next "revolutionary" medicine going into testing.

For example. Why I am being targeted? Seems like a waste of money

We targeted science websites last year. Basically, it's like targeting general population - those websites receive millions of visitors, you can spend $1000 per day and more than 90% of clicks will bounce, wasting like $900 in the process.

I mean, I could easily get the word out to 1000 students who would then spread it further by word of mouth. We have an investment society here on campus, and they had a massive event around crypto just last month. The reason I have not attended and pushed Gridcoin is due to the severe bugs we are experiencing. I do not want to pull users in and then have them mostly leave again.

Once we see more stability, which the devs are working tirelessly on, I can definitely get significant exposure on campus, for free. It will be much more effective than shotgun advertising of science websites too.

Same.

Same.

are you talking about the google ads campaign?

so we should try and get ads on https://sciencex.com/ and http://www.iflscience.com/ etc?

phys.org, medical express, and techxplore are all pretty related to what we do, and that's where i got my science information before i knew any better. :)

Sort of. Problem being that these sites have to be more expensive. Probably the best option would be to try to have an article published about us. It doesn't even have to cost money. Publish an interesting enough white paper, get published on ars technica, that would really be a huge impact.

it's a shame so many of your upvotes on this are bots. :(

When you have a moment - please explain why you felt the need to flag my comment.

It might not was the best idea from my side.
I think that unwanted content should be ignored, or flagged. Commenting makes it more visible.

I did not mean anything bad by it, I'm a long time supporter of the team behind Gridcoin (I'm in pool #3). I have lots of back/forth with cheetah in comments, it's all in fun. I used to get those generic type responses on my posts as well before, when I do weekly updates for the BeyondBitcoin community. Over time, the bot learns what content is legit and moves on, but it serves a valuable purpose here. No hard feelings ;-)

Why not creating demand for the currency through hard to get rewards that can be purchased for coins, and where the rewards have some kind of connection to the science projects being conducted? I am thinking of something like a 1 on 1 meeting with a noble price winner or famous researcher. Naming of celestial object etc. The money paid for the price could easily go back to a fund that supports the development of BOINC or GRC. Just some thoughts from my side
