Do not use items from the Advanced menu. Even if they would work, they do not do what is expected. The official snapshot is the preferred way to initially sync.
You need Connections for the wallet to work. If no connections appear after 30 minutes of runtime, you may need to "addnode" to config file or console.
Of course you need Internet connection for it to work.
