The winter is here, if you are considering to start Mining, I suggest you to start BOINCing instead

in gridcoin •  6 years ago

Colder temperatures have arrived to our country and, despite I have never stopped BOINCing since more than one year and half , I have to tell that the CPU and GPU of my computer appreciate the "softer" temperatures.

On summer I have seen the GPU temperature sensor reaching values of 72 Degrees celsius while today, hardly reaches 60 degrees.

Additionally to the good thermal conditions that my room is benefiting from BOINCing today , crunching and staking at GRIDCOIN provides me with both, good stake of GRIDCOIN coins and good sensations and moral benefit because my feelings of being helping for the sake of science development is somehow "orgasmic".

To tell you the truth, I am keeping BOINCing and GRIDCOINing mainly for the second benefit more than for the first.

GRIDCOIN altcoin is not having a good time as the whole Crypto Market but, for GRIDCOIN in particular, is being much tougher.

However, as you can see in the chart above, GRIDCOIN has the potential right now at least to multiply its current price ($0,010189 USD) 18 times fold.

GRIDCOIN [GRC] is one of the most veterans coins at the Coinmarketcap. It's first announcement came to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=324118.0 on November 2013.

GRIDCOIN is the rewarding coin for BOINCers .
''BOINC is an open source volunteer computing grid which combines the processing power of individual users for the purposes of scientific research. It is free to use and already home to 30+ projects spanning a range of scientific disciplines. Examples include protein structure prediction (Rosetta@home), mapping the Milky Way galaxy (Milkyway@home), searching for record prime numbers (Primegrid), and tackling problems in public health and clean energy (World Community Grid)." At GRIDCOIN, the word "MINERS" is not used, despite is a very similar process, instead we use the term "GRIDCOIN RESEARCHERS". Thus, your computational power is better used not only for regarding you economically but for doing RESEARCH.

The installation process is really easy, you just have to install BOINC in any computer, Android tablet or the like, attach your devices to Researching projects you like and start BOINCing. The same with GRIDCOIN, simple installation of the wallet and simple steps to follow and that's all.

Just go to GRIDCOIN and follow the excellent guides there.

Also the following explanatory videos are very educative and useful:

Awesome post! I never mined because I did not want to support that huge "waste" of energy. But since my computer is running for a long time and doesn't do anything energy consuming most of the time, I like to put my computing power at the disposal of such projects.

I will have a look at the whole thing in peace, then I can also be a bit more lazy in good conscience. xD

Thank you for that post

You’re welcome. I think it’s worth.

Everything is set up. Lets see how it works ^^
Do you have some projects you would prefer?

It depends, if you have GPU, primegrid and GPUGRID are good ones.
For CPU, asteroids, world community Grid and NFS works well

btw, If you are just starting now and you don't have any GRIDCOIN in your wallet, try Pool-crunching instead of SOLO-crunching.
https://www.gridcoin.us/Guides/pool.htm

how much do you earn per day btw?

it depends but, usually 4-7 GRC a day... I have only two computers crunching and not 24h, only when they are switched on.

Takes time to get a good Magnitude

My mining rig has been sleeping for a while. But this sounds interesting.

I remember the old folding @ home

I switched off my miners a couple of months back. They electricity costs were making them uneffective. I was using Nicehash with a pair of Nvidea 1070's.

Is it really worth it to crack them going again?

I don't think mining is worth, neither BOINCing in economical terms but, at least, BOINCing is useful for the science and mankind

It looks like you are throttling your tasks by "Use at most x% CPU time". That is very inefficient. It wastes more power than saves. If you want to reduce your heating, please look into downclocking your CPU. In linux you can use cpufreq or intel_pstate's max_perf_pct.

Interesting...thanks @toofasteddie

Don't forget that Gridcoin requires staking in order to get rewards. That's the reason I don't use it.

I was doing some work units for World Community Grid and linked my account to Byteball, until my hard drive failed. Yes, somehow my hard drive is always crashing when I use it to perform some work units.

When I buy a new external hard drive I will try to start again. Although not with Gridcoin, it doesn't matter.

That's not totally true, you can always get rewarded if you do Pool Crunching at grcpool.com
It is the best way for beginners.
Doing so, you can crunch also World Community Grid wu and get rewarded with gridcoins (they exchange the earned byteball per gridcoin and then they split between crunchers)
You don't need to have any stake if Crunching at grcpool to get rewarded.

I didn't know that
