God is merciful: Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love

The Book of Lamentations was written after the destruction of the holy city of Jerusalem by the Babylonians and its authorship is attributed to the prophet Nehemiah. The book is composed of five lamentations that describe the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the situation of the inhabitants of Jerusalem who were able to survive, the poems describe a sad and desolate situation, the author of the book does nothing more than express bitterness for the situation, but it is also true that hope for a better future is never lost. Due to its markedly pessimistic tone, the book is reminiscent of the Book of Job.
In particular, the third lamentation is a poem that teaches us that everything proceeds from the power and the wisdom of God, both good and bad. The Lord is just and merciful and his perfect love (Agape) does not abandon men, God is firm and constant, and does not change like the clouds in the sky. That is why men must live with equanimity and return to him, God does not tolerate injustice and if men practice sin and take the wrong path, God eventually repays ("For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." Hosea 8:7), men in the face of this spiritual truth must examine their path. God establishes rewards for the righteous and punishments for sinners.
This is how the author of the book expresses the situation of man in front of the Lord:
"For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.
Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.
For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.
To crush underfoot
all prisoners in the land,
to deny people their rights
before the Most High,
to deprive them of justice—
would not the Lord see such things?
Who can speak and have it happen
if the Lord has not decreed it?
Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that both calamities and good things come?
Why should the living complain
when punished for their sins?
Let us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the LORD" Lamentations 3:31-40.
