Guide: Hey Minnows! Here’s a way to support each other!

in guide •  7 years ago

Minnows can give support as much as we are looking to recieve it..I am here to get on my soap box with my very own Dflo perspective about the Minnow Support Project, MSP Waves Radio, and Discord (that link takes you to the PAL server for Minnow Support). This robust trifecta of resources aren’t just for you to use but they are also places where you can give.

My suggestion is that we can do better in the post promotion channels to support one another by using a 2:1 rule of thumb.

Here is a little overview in case some newbies are reading this, to help you not be as confused, hopefully! :) Feel free to ask me questions though if you need help!

The Minnow Support Project

You may have heard about it before, but in case you haven’t, this is an amazing project where you can network, make actual friends, promote your posts, and there’s an upvote bot that you can use once per day to upvote your posts and give them a little extra boost. The hub of activity for the Minnow Support Project takes place in the Peace Abundance and Liberty Discord Chat, but you should check out the website, too, for a consolidated place of massive amounts of information.

MSP Waves Radio

Its part radio station, part super-active chat. Being able to chat with the radio show host and other moderators in the accompanying chat room in real time is an amazing resource. Some of the shows feature guests from the development community, some have minnows come on and share their experiences. There’s music, conversation, and just all-around awesomeness. You might even dance.

The PAL Discord

Join it here if you haven’t already, and you will find all of the above!. There are also a ton of other Discord servers related to Steemit, and I have not found them all. But use the search box to find some more.

My soapbox — a 2:1 Support/Promote Rule of Thumb

My main thing I want to urge Minnows to start doing if you have not thought of it already is to use all the Post Promotion areas as if they are feeds. This goes for Steemit Chat and Discord, but if you want to support Minnows in particular, head over to the Postpromotion and Upvote channels in the PAL Discord. When you drop a link in one of those places, you can scroll around in there and find a few posts to go check out. It’s a great way to know you are supporting other Minnows, and I always wind up finding interesting content I would not have come across otherwise.

I wrote this post because I came across a minnow the other day who was bummed because he wasn’t feeling like his posts were getting enough attention. He had assumed that everyone just goes in the channels, dumps off their link, and takes off, so he didn’t see the point in trying to promote that way. I think a lot of people do just share and run, but I have noticed upvotes after promoting in those channels, so it works... a little bit.

But, we could all get a little better about it, so that is why I suggest that any time you drop a link in a channel, click on at least 2 interesting links in that same channel. I am not saying you have to commit to voting on those two posts you check out, but at least go see if you might like them. I am very in favor of us upvoting content that we actually like!

And let’s not be dogmatic, either. If you can’t do a 2:1 every time, that is okay (sometimes we just don’t have time), but its a good guideline or goal. In fact you can always just go back to the channel later on to make up for it!

If you aren’t doing something like this already, it is simple way to be more supportive, find more posts, and meet more people here on Steemit.

If you are a Minnow, what other kinds of things do you do to spread the love around here? Let me know!

Have a lovely day/evening wherever you are!

Lately I am all Ocean.. here is the word Steemit written in the sand from my time on the beach today. The photo turned out kind of weird.. I was a little too relaxed to try several times :)

Cool initiative! And yeah, I should check out the postpromotion a little more and look for some hidden gems instead of just dropping my blog in there.

What do I do to spread the love?

I'm being kind to people, trying to help people that just start out in my own way, start DM's with them and check out their profiles. It often leads to two way voting and comments and a bond. I mainly upvote minnows, as they need it way more than whales and are often very approachable.

I might also become a curator pretty soon. Something I'm really looking forward to.

Nice meeting you today!

P.S. I love your Steemit beach picture :>)

Those things are all great too! When you say you might curate, what do you mean? Will you be starting a second blog here? What will it be about? I am interested because I am thinking about trying to curate the art of local artists and was wondering how to go about it best. Thanks about the beach picture too, it was a really fun day.

I'm not planning to start a second blog, but to hunt for original, creative posts by people who haven't really been discovered yet. The same happened to me a month or two ago - I was discovered by a curator - and now I've been asked to start working on the other side too :>)

P.S. Try talking to @carlgnash about curation - hope you don't mind me tagging you, Carl - you might have seen him around. He's doing great work for the platform

True we all need to help each other, 2:1 is a great idea and we should all try to do our best to help others. Then we will receive help:-)

Yes, if a whole bunch of us start using this rule of thumb, we might all see more activity on our posts. Its win-win, really.

I registered about a month ago so I should still fall under the "minnow" title I suppose.

That being said you touched upon encountering another minnow that was bummed due to lack of attraction to his posts. I think a lot of people whenever they enter a messaging board / community where hope to immediately take off, myself included.

It takes some time to build a name for oneself and I am still doing that obviously. However, part of my acclimation to the community has been finding other minnows or whales in a "new" post section and leaving them some encouraging feedback + upvote. In addition, if I like their current post and some of their previous posts I'll give them a follow.

I am a month old as well. When do we stop being Minnows? I think its after we reach a certain level of Steem but I am not actually sure how much. But a lot, LOL. It does take time. Best of luck to you!

Great idea @dflo! Would love to know, that the post-promotion channels are not only "link-dumps" which nobody is looking at. I always check a few posts, when I´m posting a link in the promotion-channels. Give what you want to get from another! :D

Exactly! When I was writing this I didnt want to make it into a guilt trip like YOU BETTER DO THIS OR YOU ARE LAME, because its more about an exchange, and giving-recieving, for those of us who are inclined to view things that way.

Good principles , well written. I believe that deserves an upvote . I like our style

Thank you @stickchumpian! :)

Excellent reflection, I will begin to see two articles in Pospormotion of Pal and give them my vote
