What is the best way to learn the guitar?

Hello! I suggest that you first learn your scales and arpeggio. I like to warm up by repeating a pattern of:

  1. Start pointer finger on low F (first fret on your top E string) then walk 1-2-3-4 using your next 3 fingers slowly. When all 4 fingers are on the fretboard, release, and slide pointer finger up to F# (2nd fret) and repeat the middle/ring/pinky/ pattern and so on. When your pointer finger reaches the 7th fret or so, work backwards to the F note one fret at a time. Repeat this on each of the strings working from the 1st-6th fret.

  2. When you get to the little e string, reverse the process by starting with the pinky fretting the first note, and work pinky-ring-middle-pointer pattern

  3. You can now do the 4-fret series starting on the big E string with the pointer on 1st fret. Practice doing Pointer-Middle-Ring-Pinky series on each the strings down from E--A--D--G--b--e. When your pinky fingers the 4th fret on little e, reverse back up staying in the box of frets 1-4 on each string. You can reverse this starting on the pinky 4th fret on big E string.

Not only does the feel great for your fingers to gain strength and muscle memory, it sounds pretty cool as well.

Practice this and learn your scales and arpeggio, and also learn the major and minor chords.

When you have done those things, it will be easy to listen to a song you like and mentally transpose it to the guitar based on your familiarity with the sounds.

Cheers!
JG
