Memorial Day Holiday Weekend Questions Rise
Gulf Moisture Cold Front
Of the three summer holidays that are ahead of us the Memorial Day holiday weekend is the one that sits squarely in the spring season and it is the one that often times is the most problematic of three. It doesn't help matters much that the overall pattern this spring has been a cool and wet one. This could come back front and center next weekend thanks to a persistent trough in the Gulf of Mexico that extends southward into the Northwest Caribbean.
If we combine this with an active northern jet stream pattern from Canada it could set the stage for wet weather during the holiday weekend with Sunday and Monday Memorial Day being at the greatest risk. The trough in the south has been responsible for the wet weather of the last several days. That is going to relax a bit as the northern jet stream flexes its muscle a bit and brings dry air down for Wednesday through Saturday. After that however there could be issues.
With an approaching cold front on Sunday we are also seeing tropical moisture moving northward into the Southeastern US. With the main jet stream and the Gulf of Mexico trough hanging back there is a good chance this moisture makes its way northward later Sunday or Sunday night into Monday. At least Saturday looks like a very warm day with some sunshine so at least we will salvage that. We will watch the progress of all this as the new week begins hoping that something changes along the way.
