I did get my first two guns as a teenager to perform in Western gun shows. Still, my views on gun control didn't change for several years. It took years of realizing that I was being a bit of a hypocrite, and realizing that the gun control people have literally none of their facts right, to move to my current position.
The differences between people like me and gun-grabbers is curiosity and honesty.

Gun rights people tend to learn the law, learn gun safety, and learn self-defense. Gun control advocates tend to take pride in not knowing the difference between ball ammo and a hollow point.
