" There's so many different worlds, so many different suns and we have just one world." Lyrics written by Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits

My thoughts and prayers go out to all lost lives in those horrific mass shootings at schools & events in America. RIP!

PEACE NOT WAR!

The unforgettable Dire Straits Experience concert in Vienna on Feb 20, 2018 at Wiener Stadthalle

I was totally blown away! "You get a shiver in the Dark", indeed!

Chris White’s first real break in the music industry came in 1981 when he was asked to play on Nick Heyward’s album “North Of A Miracle’’. Following this success, his reputation continued to build, playing and recording with artists such as Paul McCartney, Aztec Camera, Chris DeBurgh, The The, and Mark Knopfler, the latter leading to what he is best known for – the saxophone sound of Dire Straits. It's nearly impossible NOT to remember this band, if you are born my generation?

IMG_4982.jpg

I couldn't believe when my dear friend, who works as a booker for the agency I started my music career with, called me and invited me to see ' The Dire Straits Experience" at Wiener Stadthalle.

IMG_4971.JPG

I didn't expect much because there was only one original member playing but I was amazed how good this band was , especially their vocalist/ guitarist Terence Reis replacing Mark Knopfler.

He was smashing!

“The unbelievable Knopfler channelling of guitarist/singer Terence Reis… not only replicates Knopfler’s guitar and singing style in an eerily accurate manner, he performs with such gusto and passion it was easy to forget we weren’t watching the original Dire Straits in its early 1980s prime. From intense, elongated versions of epics like “Telegraph Road” and “Tunnel of Love” to fan favourites like “Walk Of Life” and “Brothers In Arms,” the music hit every target, without a false note of mimicry or nostalgia...” - Source Website

It sounded like in the old days.

I had a tiny little, silver Autobianchi back in the early 80's and their first Album called " Dire Straits was on repeat day for day, mostly on the highway, cruising from Vienna to Innsbruck, every second weekend, to hang out with my Motor cycle "Gang", smoking our first joints and playing Jazz!

I was never big on Rock but this album was different.

Mark Knopfler's guitar solos were simply amazing and this bands sound unique.

Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub-rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. While a few of the songs fall flat, the album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career. - Source

Brothers in Arms!

This song brought me to tears at the concert the other day because its so so so beautiful! I had goosebumps. I recorded some parts of this performance but YouTube wouldn't allow me to keep it and I am not sure if they will take it down.

The Exquisite Brothers in Arms Album was released in 1985 when I was in my mid 20's.

Dire Straits playing Brothers in Arms with Eric Clapton at Wembley concert celebrating Nelson Mandel 70th Birthday.

Lyrics- Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Someday you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn to be
Brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world

But we…

Mark Knopfler performing one of the best verions ever of "Brothers in Arms" during "Music for Montserrat", live from Royal Albert Hall, London - 15 September 1997.

On the evening of September 15, 1997, legendary British music producer George Martin (who had risen to prominence with the Beatles) held a benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall for the small Caribbean island of Montserrat, which had recently been devastated by a volcanic eruption. All of the invited superstars had recorded some of their biggest hits at Montserrat's Air Studios, which Martin had founded in 1970, and this shared history gives Music for Montserrat an added sense of enjoyment among friends.

Fantastic post - brought back memories and the intro re Florida shootings
was a very important echo of sane voices speaking louder than ever. I'm in Florida and we appreciate all the support from around the world to stop the insanity. Thanks and who doesn't love Dire Straits!

I am constantly in shock when I hear those kind of news via USA and in tears for the parents of those kids. My daughter is 23 and I am glad we live in Vienna now. Once of the safest places I have ever been. She was born in Manhattan but I decided to take her to Bali and Now Europe.
I truly hope something will change in your country.
Nice to meet you!

Hiii My lovely @mammasitta, how are you and what about your health. nice to see your new post here after many days. I hope you are better now.
I am always against the war, and unable to understand such kind of aggression trend. Life is very short so we should share love and peace with each other and enjoy our life.

Aaaaah, hab ganz übersehen dass die da waren.

jetzt muss ich aber echt eine ausgleichsdosis dire straights hören ;-)
Youtube on.

Hahhaa! I am pleasantly surprised that you know them:)
Die Band war echt unglaublich toll in der Stadthalle.
Habe einige links mit best of hier gepostet.
Also ich war auf alle Fälle wieder 20 :)
Vor Allem beim Brothers of Arms

Hahhaa! I am pleasantly surprised that you know them:)

Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career...

It's a bid sad when a band comes along, puts out something momentous, and then struggles to maintain that level, going forward. Dire Straights was certainly that kind of band. I was in my 20's, as well, and I can put myself in that moment. There was so much going on in music in those days...

To their credit, several of their hits from that album have remained relevant to today. That is perhaps the strongest testament to the quality or innovative nature of a piece of music. It's ability to transcend the test of time.

Glad to see you back posting, @mammasitta!

It was more than time that I teach about OUR music history :) and I was so lucky to hear their music again played by this awesome band , especially the vocalist/Guitarist ....He was so so so good!

I don't think that there are many youngsters who know them

Great post as always, yes it's a good thing to think about the victims.
The answer to all these WHY questions you can hear in the following song:

superrrrrrrr song!!!!

Yup, It's money that matters in the USA

I loved the intro in that clip you posted and Here is my classic reply :)

Exactly...
Ohhh, a long, long time not heard.....

It’s always the same story about MONEY :) but this might change soon....maybe!?

I was so moved when i saw pictures of teenagers all matching in one voice, makes me wish for alot of thing for and in my country...

Keep on wishing and also manifesting!!!!
Only Love can be the answer

Ich hab den "jungen" Mark Knopfler vor ca. 35 Jahren in der Olympiahalle in Innsbruck erlebt. War ein tolles Erlebnis :)

Wow! Das finde ich aber super!

i really dont know what is in the head of these people that shoot at the people in schools...

Insanity!!! I can't understand this law at all that you can buy guns like milk in the super market

Yes, a unique group. It is not surprising that the skin is goosebumps
. Live music is always cosmic, and if you still perform talent it's generally unattainable. Thank you for sharing.

Enjoy listening!!!! This song moved me once again
Brothers in Arms!!!!

Mass shootings of schoolboys are terrible. I can only express my condolences and hope, that this will not happen again! Thank you for your support in the post!

Beautiful post @mammasita. So glad it turned out to be an amazing concert. They definitely had some deeply moving music. Thank you for sharing.

Happy to hear that you enjoyed as well :) through my article, ears and my eyes. It was massive!

We live in a world in which these songs will always be relevant (((

I had goosebumps when I heard their songs again

In the video, a grandmother with an adult grandson. Words can be unclear, but you can catch the meaning if you look. People gave their youth to war.

those innocent souls has done nothing but still lost life :( Rip

and rightly said dear all we need is peace

So many thoughts
So many hurts
People think others' wrong
But can't stop to help the other one
Everybody in their minds, are right
Yet nobody cares to sit down and write
To see the reasons behind pain
And as to what end is this aim?

very beautiful smartphonephotography and aswesome music-history dear lovely friend @mammasitta.

@mammasitta

I hope you enjoyed the magical sound and deep wordzzzzzz

music history..that's great to share..
thank you very much..
love it..

@resteem done.

just close your eyes and listen to those songs

I a gree with you.
I also do not like violence, peace loving life is my motivation now.

Thats good !!!

Agree.. No more conflict.. Before MoU in Aceh, Indonesia, so bad and crazy.. People kill people.. Akh..

Interesting post bringing back the old skool culture. I appreciate your effort because this type of songs are virtually non existent unless people like you talk about it

Music History!!! Somebody has to do it :) that those youngsters know what we jammed to those days.

Really nice post, especially the message about the one world within which we live. As for the concert, that would have been something to see. I've been a HUGE fan of Mark Knopfler for a long, long time. Finally got to see him in concert a few years back. He is so incredible to watch, as well as listen to. I could not believe how he just stood there, almost looking half asleep, with his guitar in hand, and the music coming out of it just blew me away. In his hands, the guitar talks and sings, above and beyond mere playing...truly an amazing artist. As you said, often can bring you to tears very easily. Glad I got to see him, and hope to one day again. (I never did get to see Dire Straights, and would love to hear that concert with all their music in tow.) Thanks.

some one has to take strong measures to stop all these violence we can't grown with this

the videos just made me live up the moment it was great music is something which bind us together

i love this band

I'm not a huge dire straits fan but they were unbelievably huge in the 80s

Me neither BUT it was about THAT feeling those days.....Those songs .....can't be compared to todays music world.

wonderful to know that you enjoyed this concert review and sounds

Very nice post. War always brought misery and lost for sure!

no doubt! BUT ......when will this end?

War is an economic avtivity for those on arm industry, it is created. Tailored made! The production process must go on!

This great, beautifully articulated for good understanding. I love manner of presentation and to each and every meaning it represents, kudos!

thanks very much ...hope you listen to that music as well

Amazing and very interessing post thank you for sharing

I miss you

Glad you liked it and I hope you listen also

It's really saddening hearing such negative stories in the society.
Conflicts and wars aren't the solution.
Let's give peace a chance.
PEACE NOT WAR
I love this message

Listen to the music and close your eyes , dream there will be peace in our world one day

great post.. thanks for your music history sharing

Did you every hear about this band before?

it is rock music that rocks through the music itself and does not depend on a singer with a 'wild'/'dramatic' voice and look. know what I mean? they don't seem to take themselves so serious as e.g. U2 or try to be cool as the rolling stones. cool music made also for uncool people.

I am NOT sure if I understand what you mean.

To much good songs and guitar solo’s to hear. I will sure take some extra time to listen many more from the Dire straits. I imagine how Great the athmosphere was during the concert. Would have been Amazing. Thanks for this good selection.

good post good luck always @ mammasitta
