So I know many air rifle enthusiasts are often looked down upon, and told to "get a real gun". But there are plenty of practical uses for an air rifle, from fun to survival. Plus, a cheap mass-produced BB gun can be had for under 50 bucks, and are widely available used. They can go through thousands of rounds with very minimal maintenance and are simple to work on if something goes wrong.
For one, if you like to plink or want to just practice without breaking the bank, an air gun is the way to go. Even 22's are expensive these days, but you can shoot off thousands of rounds of BBs for the same price as 100 rounds with a 22. What is more, air guns are silent so you can shoot in the comfort of your yard or basement.
I have a pump style air rifle, so if I want to shoot it in the house (with goggles and no people or animals around!) I can get lower power by pumping only once or twice. I can also get 4.5 mm plastic BBs for indoor shooting, but don't get 6mm airsoft rounds, they are too big. Outdoors, I just pump more for more power and farther distances.
If you want to play wargames with your friends, you want an airsoft gun, NOT a BB gun. I know, I know, plenty of people have done this....but plenty of people have lost an eye or worse dong this too! Airsoft guns come in all styles and are made to look very realistic, and are mostly low-powered enough that you just need to wear eye protection if you want to play army man, and much cheaper and easier to set up than paintball.

If you want a serious air rifle, look into pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) models. They can fire serious projectiles up to .357 (9mm) and .45 caliber at velocities that make them effective small-and medium-game guns. I very much want one. And they can skirt otherwise-draconian laws against firearms in countries like South Africa and Australia!
