Well the answer to the question is "Colt". It started at Colt but now other gun manufacturers are also making guns which are based on a similar platform.
These guns all fall under the Semi-Automatic category and are extremely popular with the masses in America.
The reason for this popularity? It's mostly affordability, lethality and legality.
The guns are pretty affordable at a couple of Grand for a rifle. It can shoot rounds at 3000 feets per second so these guns pack quite the punch. Plus they also support several kinds of ammunitions. Finally, AR-15's are legal under American laws and therefore you are not breaking any laws if you are buying guns for hunting, sports of self-defense.
