South African Police to Gangster Gun Connection

One of the largest gun smuggling investigations in Cape Town, South Africa, has had an ironic origin for these illicit firearms used in the violent gang culture. In 2013, investigators found that guns used in murders actually were suppose to be owned by police officers, but all had their serial numbers filed off a similar fashion. An overwhelming 1066 murders were a result of stolen police guns. Officers who looked into the investigation were actually transferred for what they believe were politically motivated reasons, as the police allocated less resources to looking into the police-gang gun connection. Ex police colonel, Chris Prinsloo, actually was sentenced to jail for selling over 2000 guns that were supposed to be destroyed to a gun dealer named "Hunter". Additionally, guns were stolen from military bases and not only hit the streets of South Africa, but were also exported to other countries. Moreover, right wing groups are suspected of stockpiling these firearms in the event that they need to use it to fight the government.
