[HACKING WARNING] Be careful with all the Steemit apps that are appearing, some might get you hacked

Steemers,

Hacking is serious business. If you account is breached then you loose all the hard work you've put in for such a long time.

  1. Make sure you're using a generated password from any online password generator. Don't use your standard ones you use on all accounts. Just google password generator and you'll find a bunch.
  2. Keep the Steemit password only for steemit and the other passwords only for the other platforms. Don't use the same passwords in two places. Especially not on Steemit and other places.
  3. It's great that all these new apps appear, that are dedicated to the Steemit community and make this place more exceptional than it already is, but I'm growing concerned that they might have embedded key-loggers or other exploits and they could gather information about you and even sensitive ones like passwords etc. Be very very careful, have spyware and antivirus software up to date and be reluctant to use various websites that are not proofed by others first.

What do you do if you actually get hacked?

Hopefully you find that out very soon to decrease the damages and then recover your account through the newly implemented Account Recovery Process posted by the Steemit team yesterday: https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemit3/third-update-to-july-14th-security-announcement-account-recovery-begins

Be safe,

Great post! User's should be very skeptical of any apps that ask for your password unless they are a known trusted company (and even then you should be weary). Personally I only authenticate with Steemit.com and their CLI utility, no third party utilities that ask for it unless I have reviewed the code.

Thank you for your support!!

You do raise a good point, maybe people should make a point of using proper sandboxing/isolation or at least have a "steemit" browser seperate from normal web usage..

I'm midway through writing a post showing off some of these new services popping up (like your steem.ly), its amazing how quick this place is growing

Yes. With earned money in stake here it will be crushing to see your account hacked and everyone needs to isolate their Steemit as much as possible (browser, passwords etc.). Looking forward to your article!

nice! Will do!

what up with that man?

Thanky you for warning i've been opening lots of thoose web apps, and lots of them are very useful, but danger exists. Do you maye have a list of safe ones?

Unfortunately no and it has to be a collective effort to validate the safe apps as if one individual says it's safe it doesn't mean it is if you know what I mean. But we should maybe start doing that. I'm not saying with certitude the apps people developed will hack them, I'm saying that there is that risk and people should 1. protect themselves and 2. know what to do when they get hacked.

Better safe than sorry. If you contain them, it should be OK.

None of the apps listed on http://steemtools.com uses any form of login so there is no involved in getting hacked...
It is the same as linking and visiting any other site. Of course never fill out your password or share your keys on any site... There are other ways for people to read the blockchain...

Be very attentional whenever you need to give a third party a 'write' access and share posting keys (or even higher keys)... I would recommend against it... There are other authoritive funcitonalitties in the blockchain in please for apps acting up as you by just giving them posting_authority for example which you can revoke.

this was a good read andu:) upvoted you.
