Well, using a VPN, you now are associated with a certain group of people, you still leave a payment trail to the VPN, you are still using an ISP, and you still use an IP address with your name attached to it.

Any US or UK based VPN provider is a massive risk, as they can be compelled by legislation to provide information to government agencies. They do this without your consent or providing notice, with the provider gagged from even discussing the request. Lavabit would be a case in point. To quote Lavabit founder Levar Levison "I would strongly recommend against anyone trusting their private data to a company with physical ties to the United States." Far better to use an EU or even HK based service.

Thank you! For your activity to remain hidden there aren't any good alternatives unless you really know what you're doing, and even the experts sometimes end up in Jail. For secure long distance communication the Pigeon is still a good alternative. Sometimes it's easier to disappear into the masses rather than trying to achieve invisibility. Another thing to not lose sight of; laws can change at any time and marshal law would give any government instant access to all available data within it's borders. Then there is Minix, a micro os baked into your Intel chips, accessible regardless of the OS on your hard drive. Go ahead; Google ~ Minix on Intel.

Thanks for sharing.... I don't use VPN's, proxies, or anything like that right now, but I do plan to. One of the problems is not knowing how "legit" certain companies are. Since obviously you've used it, Virtual Shield IS legit, and thus it's going on my safe list.
