“I should have ….” Ji ji sighs.
“Coward. You’d never do it,” Oba says.
“I’m no coward,” Ji ji growls.
The 5:15 roars towards them.
“Banzai!” Ji ji screams, living exactly 1.2 seconds.
Oba keeps a still face only smiling briefly when the first check arrives.
bullet train screams by
dust and porn mag pages swirl
morning departs quick!
Truth ... I remember the reading material though perfectly acceptable to be read out in the open on the train. The gaijin was shocked ... lol:)

Japan recently passed some laws concerning which magazines can have their covers displayed in convenience stores, but I don't think there is anything in the works as far as what can be read on trains. I've been here 14 years and I'm still shocked sometimes by what I accidentally see being read on the trains sometimes.

They have a different view on such matters; less puritanical, for sure, but certainly also lacking in gender equality and care for self. Addictions to this kind of thing and other 'outlets' are almost seen as an essential part of existence; the Japanese work so hard and often deprive themselves of rest. Controlled indulgences are seen as remedy, rather than the pursuit of balance and moments of zen. What I would like to see is attitudes and practices change and then train reading material would change too. We have the same problem here too ... but instead of porn on the train, we have addicts sleeping in the streets. I guess what I am trying to say is the situation cannot be remedied with localized legislation. A shift in the way we approach life might be more effective. But anyways ... heavy stuff ... let me wish you a good day:)
