Hair regrowth treatment is a method that promises women firmer skin with smoothed wrinkles. You have your own, prepared blood injected under the skin of your face.
Now the aesthetic surgeons have chosen men as a new target group. In these, autologous blood therapy is supposed to stimulate the hair roots and allow the hair to sprout. However, several meetings are necessary for this. A profitable business for doctors. Scientific evidence for the method? None.
Hair loss scratches male self-confident
Nevertheless, the aesthetic surgeon's calculation could work out. If men notice the shrinkage on their heads, especially at a young age, their self-esteem quickly suffers. And most of the people who have already lost the fight can voluntarily shave their head completely bald. The majority thinks differently: they can still put up with a receding hairline, but a bald head is not possible with vain men. Resourceful sales strategists take advantage of the plight of men. Whether hair tonics, vitamin tablets, medicinal herbs, Botox injections, shampoo massages, caffeine or laser therapy - some willingly pulls out their wallet for dubious offers. Too bad that most of the time there is no success.
Blood pressure medication as a hair restorer?
Only two drugs and hair transplantation have been proven to be effective, and not for everyone either. You have to pay yourself here, of course. The first method was discovered by chance. The active ingredient minoxidil for the treatment of high blood pressure came onto the market in the early 1970s. It is still approved today as a reserve drug for this application. But women in particular soon complained of an undesirable side effect: the tablets increased hair growth almost all over their bodies.
Manufacturers took advantage of this. They produced solutions and foams that are applied to the head and normally only work there. Men can rub a five per cent solution or foam into sparse hair twice a day. "You should start early, then you can stop the hair loss," says dermatologist, the resident specialist for hair medicine and transplantation in Berlin. "Often there is even an improvement."Studies suggest, however, that a miracle should not be expected. Most of the fluff that is present thickens and enlarges. Months pass before this becomes visible. The daily dose of the over-the-counter product costs around one euro. Possible side effects are hair growth in unwanted areas, scalp irritation or an allergy. Only very rarely does the blood pressure drop sharply with topical application, combined with dizziness and palpitations.
Prostate enlargement agent prevents hair loss
Finer considers the active ingredient finasteride to be more effective in the longer term (daily costs: around two euros). The prescription tablets intervene in the mechanism that causes hair to fall out in the event of inherited sensitivity. The reason is the "male hormone " testosterone, which is converted on-site into the much more effective dihydrotestosterone.
Finasteride inhibits this conversion, although not completely. As a result, the active ingredient, which is used in higher doses against benign prostate syndrome, slows hair loss - and in about three-quarters of those treated, an average of 17 additional hairs per square centimetre sprout, according to at least the result of a study with more than 1500 participants. Like Minoxidil, it has to be used permanently for lasting effectiveness.
Critical effects on hormonal balance and sexuality
Finasteride has, to a lesser extent, those side effects are also known from prostate therapy. It causes breasts to grow and ache in less than 1 in 1,000 men. The European Medicines Agency cannot completely rule out the possibility that it causes breast cancer in men in extremely rare cases.
Other side effects are most common: about one in 50 people treated, the desire for sex or an erection decreases, and fertility may also be impaired.
What hair therapists consider acceptable, other doctors find questionable. The pharma critical "drug letter" even calls for finasteride to be withdrawn for use on the hair. In the case of purely cosmetic therapy, deep intervention in the hormonal balance and side effects are not justifiable.
Hair transplant: hair growth without hormones
Anyone who follows this line of argument or for whom the medication does not work remains a third solution: A hair transplant will temporarily or even permanently forget the problem. Since celebrities have admitted it, grafting your own hair has become socially acceptable.
Two methods have prevailed. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The strip technique is cheaper. Whoever chooses it does not reveal himself to be stubble-bald for weeks because only a narrow strip is shaved and the seam can be covered with hair. However, a scar that is clearly visible when the skull is shaved remains.
Impaired wound healing or inflammation is possible with both techniques, but rarely. This is because the scalp is very well supplied with blood, which promotes healing. "With the single hair technique, you cause a much larger wound because numerous small holes are poked over a larger area," explains surgeon, who runs a hair transplant practice in BiocosPk.
Hair follicles are transplanted
because not all hair is sensitive to hormones, men with severe hair loss usually keep a ring of hair on the back of their head. Around half of the hair from this area can be removed without it being noticeable. In total, that's 4,000 to 7,000 "follicular units" with one to five hairs that can be transplanted to the front - with full consciousness under local anaesthesia.
However, this rarely happens in a single session. "The younger the patient, the more important it is to have a reserve ready for progressive hair loss," explains. Those willing to transplant should know that the grafts cannot be set as tightly as they would in their natural state. "Depending on the hair density, blood circulation and size of the bald area, we transplant 10 to 40 units per square centimetre," says. Of course, it would be 80 to 100.
His patients pay between 3,000 and 8,000 euros, depending on the effort involved. There are both cheaper and more expensive offers. However, if the procedure is worth it, you should pay particular attention to the experience of the doctor. Even if surgeons describe the operation very soberly, the operation should not be trivialized. The wounds bleed and scab’s form. This is even desirable because it prevents the grafts from slipping or falling out.
Transplanted hair also thins out
Three to four days after the procedure, those treated look "like after a boxing match," admits: the eyes are swollen shut, the complexion is bright red. There is no need to worry, he assures: "It will be over after two weeks at the latest."In principle, transplanted hair grows lifelong. But that's only half the story: of the follicular units, which often consist of several hairs, in many cases only the strongest remains with age. A certain amount of thinning is therefore inevitable in the late course of the transplant.
But maybe by then at the latest, men will no longer attach particular importance to full hair. He should question how important this is anyway. Not everyone looks older with a bald head, rather it underlines the type and gives many men a certain sex appeal.
