I am now 10 months into this wild hair journey of naturally locing my 3c hair. Im of mixed race background, and like most mixed race people our hair is a very complex and very personal story. That I have now decided to enter into the ethos of the internet.
Living in the Fiji Islands there is not always enough water or access to the products I am use to to detangle my insane hair. After trial and error of detangling with only coconut oil and leaving myself an oily mess. I decided to finally let my hair do what it wanted to do. I causally sectioned my hair off into 74 different sections and twisted each.
at first I retwisted way too much and tried to control an uncontrollable process. After a few months of that I let it go and went full free form letting my hair do what it pleased. The hardest part was the awkward way too bumpy phase. When curls would refuse to sit flat and integrate into the dread. About 4-5 months in I really started to experience an insane amount of weird lumps of hair that would stick out from each dread. I hated how that looked and tried to sow them down using thread and needle. At around the 10 month mark they have slowly started to clam down and form into tighter locs that are straight ish.
regrets are that I did not section properly and now have many dreads of many different sizes.
Huge benefit... never having to detangle my insane hair again.
I have lost a lot of length maybe about 6 inches in the past 10 months.
I dont use any fancy loc products, I use to try a bunch of different products but all ended up in a crazy amount of build up. My hair is much healthier without it. I now only occasionally spray my hair with tea tree water and witch hazel and wash with shea moisturizer activated charcoal detox shampoo.
