If we see that the brush, the shower filter, and the pillow are full of hair, we may wonder if we are not losing too much. Hair loss, however, is a completely natural phenomenon because the hair that falls, in general, grows back. But when can we consider it normal and what can we do if it is excessive?

Many people get caught up in anxiety when combing they see the brush filled with hair. Hair loss is usually considered excessive when more than 100 hairs per day fall. This indication should not, however, be generalized since the determining element is represented by the hair's life cycle: every two to six years a hair falls and a new one grows. However, this process differs from individual to individual, just like the amount of hair.

Hereditary hair fall

Especially with age, due to the influence of hormones, many people tend to lose their hair. In particular, men present a genetic predisposition to hair loss, which can sometimes occur at a young age. The reason is the sensitivity of hair bulbs (hair roots) to male sex hormones, so-called androgens.

Psychological or physical causes

There may also be other factors at the origin of excessive hair loss. Including vitamin and iron deficiencies, stress, poor or unilateral nutrition (especially in the case of fasting treatment) as well as thyroid dysfunction and certain medications. Even the season plays a key role: in spring and autumn, many people lose more hair than usual. Generally, the situation spontaneously resumes itself.

The test of the lock

With a simple test, it is possible to find out if the hair comes off too easily. With two fingers you take a lock of hair and pull slightly; if repeating this operation in several places a hair detachment occurs every time, it could be a sign of something wrong. Who for a prolonged period has the sensation of losing more hair than usual, should seek the cause by turning to a dermatologist.

Possible treatments

If the excessive hair loss has been confirmed by a doctor, the possibilities for treatment are varied. Finasteride tablets can be useful for men. It is an active ingredient that causes the body to produce less testosterone, a hormone that is a possible contributory factor in hair loss. In some cases, this active ingredient determines a loss of libido. Women must avoid using it: in extreme cases, it could even cause infertility. Alternatively, both men and women can undergo treatment with monoxide. Monoxide preparations are intended for topical use and are in the form of a spray or foam.
