Long Island Onshore Flow Brings Clouds Patchy Rain Tuesday

Sunday's rainfall was substantial over Long Island with anywhere from an inch along south shore points in Nassau and Suffolk to as much as 1.75-2 inches in some places. It ruined our Sunday for sure but now the rains are long gone to the northeast and weather conditions are trying to improve. Tonight's satellite picture (in real time) shows some clearing has occurred but this storm does not have a good solid push of dry air behind it. That creates some issues here along about Tuesday but for overnight and Monday there should be no issues. Monday we should see partly sunny skies for much of the day and highs in the low to mid 60s. However an onshore flow sets up later in the day and Monday night so ocean clouds loom and they will start to back in westward later in the day.

Monday night and especially on Tuesday look for lots of clouds and there will be some patchy rain or drizzle coming in from the east thanks to a northeast wind and high pressure east of Nova Scotia. The onshore flow is setting up a warm front to our south and that will be coming up on Thursday with the next storm headed for the Great Lakes.

Wednesday is a bit tricky. We could very well see clouds hanging tough here on Long Island with some patchy light rain or drizzle though the sun could poke through with a little bit of luck. Temperatures should make it back into the 60s. Then Thursday it is about a storm in the Rockies and Southern Plains that intensifies and heads into the Great Lakes.

This storm system is similar to Sunday's but there are two notable differences. One is that the warm front ahead of it will be a bit further to the north and that might shift the heaviest rain to upstate NY and New England. The other is that once it strengthens and moves into Southeastern Canada, it will bring in colder air to the area Friday and next weekend. Temperatures next Saturday and Sunday by day will likely not be much above the low to mid 50s. At least it will be dry. This storm could produce another 1/2 inch to an inch of rain for Long Island but we will zero in on rainfall amounts in a day or two as we draw closer to Halloween. Looks like trick or treaters will be confined to mostly indoor events.
