The Husam Zomlot example in the piece is so perfect at showing why this is so performative in a lot of instances. Zomlot is a part of Fatah. Fatah has renounced violence against Israel and is the opposition to Hamas. They were forced out of Gaza by Hamas in 2007 during the Gaza takeover. Asking this guy to condemn Hamas after he just had some family members die is beyond silly.

The idea that silence is violence gets kind of narcissistic to me. It is such a social media phenomenon. I really think it is demeaning to friends to assume they have to condemn something abhorrent every time. Especially if we are talking about a religious or ethnic identity. I don't expect Muslims to have to do that with Islamic terror groups every time they do something awful. That seems extremely bigoted. Now if someone was posting Hamas apologia or something I'd start wondering.

There's been no shortage of people with openly and explicitly disgusting statements in recent days unfortunately, so I don't even know why people go out of their way to make inferences off of people that are silent.
