It's a 500 year old art, having the blend of Persian and Arabian style was brought to India by Bahamani Dynasty.Which ruled in 14th century of Northen part of karnatka called "Bidar" Hence the craft name Bidri Craft or Bidri ware
It was believed that it was originated in Persia, where Gold n silver was inlayed on the cooper or steel
In Bidriware, pure silver is inlayed against the Black background, making it look more Royal.
What makes so unique about this craft is the particular soil being used,which is found only in the Bidar fort. Hence making this craft exclusive to this particular region.From casting to manufacturing all takes place here only, nowhere else.
The soil which is the main component of this art, has got certain chemical properties which makes it as an oxidising agent.Which is used to turn zinc- copper alloy into a permanent black color.
Process involved in making Bidri handicraft
Its an arduous task, which involves several steps requiring detailed craft skills.
In short it can be mentioned as follows
- Casting of the alloy
- Buffing
- Drawing and engraving the design
- Inlaying
- Oxidizing
The zinc copper alloy is taken in the ratio 1:16, which is later casted using resin,caster oil and soil. The detailed processed can read here: Link

Thanks to adaptability of the craftsmen, now this art is moulded from home decor to office related items. There was even a time for awhile where key chainand pen drive made out of this materials were trending.
Even i bought some of these stuffs as a gift, which would be souvenir for those are from outside
I bought these Box set for a friend as gift, who was getting married. Since it was bit customizable,asked them to write the greetings in urdu

There are many types of designs in it. The price ranges as the detailing goes into the work.
