ILANGEN, one of the traditional tools to process sugarcane sweets that used to be used by the people of Subulussalam City, Aceh, Indonesia is now beginning to become extinct. In fact, once, ilangen in the form of a waterwheel in this river became a sweetmeat processor for the people of Sada Kata Town.
Now, almost no longer can be found by artisans of sugarcane sweets that were once scattered around the Souraya river. In 2012 and then, the author once found a community group in Sub Runding, Subulussalam City is still cultivate the business of sugarcane ilangen. But this business is stumbling because of the raw material crisis. The reason is, dozens of hectares of sugarcane plantation owned by residents Runding District damaged by soaked floods that hit this area a few months ago. "All sugar cane plantation in District Runding is damaged soaked in flood, so I had to stop processing sweets because there is no raw material," said Jahar Kombih (45) one of sugarcane cultivators in the village of Panglima Sahman,
According to him, sugarcane craftsmen in Runding sub-district are totally closed due to the absence of sugar cane supply from farmers. This is due to the number of sugarcane trees belonging to the precise citizens who died from being soaked in floods lasting up to six months. Floods that occurred since the end of 2012 until last May, according to Jahar, is the worst during the 13-year period. In fact, due to floods that continue to soak the area, not only kill the sugar cane but not a few other crops such as cocoa (chocolate), bananas, rice, corn and decaying vegetable crops.
