Our hands are amazing. The way it can move, the way it helps us carry out our crucial daily tasks to live our lives, in communicating with others, in enhancing our communication with others, in bringing us to the next level of our lives, to live our dreams in playing music and in creating art, just to name a few.

A hand consists of 27 bones (not inclusive of the sesamoid bone, which is a bone, the size of a sesame seed, embedded within a tendon or a muscle, usually formed in response to strain)
and 2 major muscle group types - the extrinsic and intrinsic muscle groups.

The hand bones are categorized primarily as 3 major types (source: John Hopkins Medicine):

  • Phalanges. The 14 bones that are found in the fingers of each hand and also in the toes of each foot. Each finger has 3 phalanges (the distal, middle, and proximal); the thumb only has 2.
  • Metacarpal bones. The 5 bones that compose the middle part of the hand.
  • Carpal bones. The 8 bones that create the wrist. The 2 rows of carpal bones are connected to 2 bones of the arm--the ulna bone and the radius bone.

There are times, some of us may develop a medical condition over time, known as the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. The main symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and the thumb side of the ring finger. (source: Wikipedia: Hand)

It happens because of pressure on your median nerve, which runs the length of your arm, goes through a passage in your wrist called the carpal tunnel, and ends in your hand. The median controls the movement and feeling of your thumb and the movement of all your fingers except your pinky. (source: WebMD: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)

This Hand Model Competition by @soundwavesphoton has given me the opportunity to learn a bit more about my hands. Thanks to you, I am more grateful and appreciative of my hands. This is my entry.

Never neglect our hands as over straining will cause us to lose mobility of them. Here are some links to some hand exercises that we can do daily:

Love our hands!
