I'm curious what the archeological, sociological, scientific, etc. discourse us surrounding Hannibal and the Carthaginians. Is this likely to evoke the same racial discourse "controversy" that we saw with the likes of Cleopatra? Or is there less ambiguity/debate surrounding Hannibal's race that might allow that idiocy to possibly be quelled before it begins?
Carthage was founded by the Phoenicians, from mostly modern day Lebanon. We don't know about his mother, so similar issue as Cleopatra that there isn't total certainty, only informed speculation. Textual evidence is limited. He probably wasn't black, but he probably wasn't white. Though as with Cleopatra it is a bit of a silly discussion as modern race doesn't map well to the classical period.
