The German artist Hans Holbein the Younger, was born in Augsberg, Germany in 1497. His father who recognized the inborn talents of the little son let him work in his workshop in Augsberg. From his early childhood Hans was well tutored by his dad who was a painter with a reputation at the time.
In 1514, Holbein moved to Basel, Switzerland looking for better prospects. In Basel, Holbein gained recognition for his book illustrations, most notably the illustration of the ‘Luther Bible’, in 1522. The reformation movement led by Martin Luther, had brought troubled times to Europe. The chaotic and dangerous condition that prevailed there made Holbein move to England in 1526, in search of prosperity and safety for a time.
In England, Holbein worked for the high-ranking and influential Sir Thomas More. In 1532 he got a portrait commission from King Henry VIII. By 1536 he was working for the English king as a painter and costume and jewellary designer. His meticulously detailed court portraits, especially those of the king himself, secured Holbein’s already esteemed reputation.
Holbein settled permanently in London and passed away there in 1543.
Portraits of Henry VIII, Erasmus, Sir Thomas More, Christina and Denmark, Duchess of Milan and Ann Cleves and the painting ‘The Ambassadors’ are his masterpieces ‘Dead Christ’ and ‘Dance of Death’ (a woodcut), ‘The Artist’s Wife With Catherine and Philip’ are among the others.
