The apostle Paul during one of his missionary journeys is taken prisoner, and the Church of Philippi knowing his situation gives him financial aid. Paul expresses his gratitude in a letter addressed to the church of that city, and teaches us, with an emotional speech, that true happiness is not an end in itself, but a return, a blessing of the spiritual gifts inherited from above.
The true happiness is intimately linked to eternal life and to the love projected towards the whole creation of God, the love for the good (Agape). Aristotle explains to us that happiness is the reward for virtue, and that, greater is the virtue then greater is the happiness. It is logical to think then that happiness in its highest degree is given with the most perfect virtue, the contemplative activity or eternal life. Let us remember that the Kingdom of God is the growth of the human being in virtue, the Kingdom of God is edifying and progressive mentality, like the yeast that rises, like the tree that sprouts and bears fruit. It is through the growth in values that we can receive the Holy Spirit and achieve the most perfect form of happiness.
When we receive the spiritual gift of happiness as a consequence of the eternal life, we learn that happiness is a state of mind that allows us to be grateful in both good times and bad, as the apostle Paul explains in his letter to the Philippians:
"I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength" Philippians 4:10-13.
