5 Signs of Truly Happy People

in happiness •  7 years ago

People are no longer satisfied because they're looking for satisfaction and happiness in all the wrong places. Most people think "if only I was born rich," or "if only I am famous", then they would be happy. But these are all temporary. You may have all the wealth and fame that the world has to offer, but they do not bring true happiness.

King Solomon, the wisest and the richest man to live in this world, is a testament to this. Despite having all the wealth and material possessions, he too wonders about the meaning of life. He considered all things as vanity. And he also believed that there is more to life than just waking up in the morning, going to our daily ordeals and doing the same things over and over.

"The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less." — Socrates, lived in 450 BC.

Socrates may have found the answer a long time ago. Still, even up to this day, we remain searching. Though there is no definite solution for everyone, we can learn from other people and apply the things that we think is relevant to our lives. Here are 5 common habits of truly happy people.

1. They create their own happiness.

Truly happy people believe that happiness should come from within and they know that it takes a lot of effort to be happy inside out. So they don't waste their time waiting for happiness to come, they work for it. If you want to be happy, you need to commit to yourself and make it a priority in your life. It will not be easy, but you will surely reap what you sow.

2. They are full of gratitude.
There is always something to be grateful for: the life that we enjoy, the air that we breathe, and the good company that we keep. People who are thankful are happier and more optimistic. They don't have the time to dwell on negative emotions because they are busy being thankful of pretty much, everything. Doing so has been linked to happier moods and even better physical well-being. You have to truly appreciate everything you have in life in order to be happy and satisfied with it. If you don't, you're always going to be hungry for more, no matter how much you already have.

3. They treat everyone with kindness.
Truly happy people treat everyone with respect and kindness without expecting anything in return. Doing this for the people we love and admire is easy, but we also need to do the same even for those who we think do not deserve it. Be kind to every person you meet, give a smile, we may not know their story and the battles they are fighting, but a little positivity will come a long way.

"Set an example. Treat everyone with kindness and respect, even those who are rude to you- not because they are nice, but because you are." — Nicole Wharton

4. They surround themselves with the right people.
“Associate only with positive, focused people who you can learn from and who will not drain your valuable energy with uninspiring attitudes. By developing relationships with those committed to constant improvement and the pursuit of the best that life has to offer, you will have plenty of company on your path to the top of whatever mountain you seek to climb.” – Robin Sharma

Happiness is contagious. The people you surround yourself will greatly influence your attitude and outlook in life, so choose wisely.

5. They live in the present.

Past is past and there's nothing you can do to change it no matter how hard you try. Our tomorrows are also not promised, so there's no point day-dreaming or worrying about it (well maybe for a bit). Focus your energy in the present, focus more on things that add value to your life. We need to have hope, we need to have something to look forward to, but I hope that we will not let it rob us of the enjoyment of truly living in the moment. Be present and be mindful of whatever it is you are doing. Don't let each moment pass by without you noticing it.
