What does happiness mean actually? How do you define happiness? Why do we have different views on what happiness is?
Is having a warm and full meal happiness? Is getting a paycheck happiness? Is getting your love reciprocated what you call happiness? To me, the little things in life is what I call happiness. Of course the bigger things too but if you view things on the brighter side, you will see that the simplest act or joy is actually the one that will warm your heart. I remember my mum will always tell me this when I am in a bad mood or is in distress, ‘My dear, life is like a piece of white paper. This problem you are facing is merely a small black dot on that paper. You are focusing on the bad too much. See the bigger picture, don’t torture yourself this way.’ This advice is probably the one that keep me going for a very long time. I can be happy in various ways now. I love it and I feel happy when I get to make people laugh after they cry (or whenever). I feel good when I get to feed the stray dogs (animals) on the street. Happiness is bookstores, baking, playing with your dogs, it could be anything really.
A dog’s happiness is when you feed it (and belly rubs), sweets and toys are a kid’s joy, a dying patient’s happiness could be the last moment he or she get to spend with their family. Happiness is subjective, it depends on you, it depends on what you are going through. If you are an avid Harry Potter fan like me you would probably know this quote from Severus Snape, ‘It may have escaped your notice but life isn’t fair.’ I agree, it isn’t fair. However, we need to learn how to find the silver linings in everything we do, no matter how hard it gets. (Not toxic positivity, I don’t encourage that) Learn to find joy and happiness in the littlest things, trust me, you will be happier.
