A Road to a Happier You: Stretching

in happy •  7 years ago

Spend some time stretching. Stretching doesn’t have to be strenuous. In fact, it shouldn’t hurt. When you stretch your muscles and ligaments, you should feel a slight stretch (never pain).
My morning didn’t go as planned, so I started my day with yoga. My stretch of the day (well one of them 😹) was butterfly stretch (baddha konasana). I love hip opening. It releases tension. My other favorite area to stretch is the chest/upper back. Those stretches are referred to has “heart openers.”

Couldn't do that if I tried. I guess that means I need to stretch more.

Your feet can be much further away from your torso than mine are. The vast majority of people will not have their knees touching the ground. I would just encourage people to make sure the that they don’t feel pain in the ligament right under the hip bone.

I have had this severe mid back pain that I've been managing for as long as I can remember with drugs until I was recently prescribed some stretch exercises by a physiotherapist, I must confess I've never felt more relieved of the pain like these few weeks.. Thank you for this

It feels amazing to be able to completely relax into a stretch. During my yoga journey I have had many such moments, but not in baddha konasana, that is definitely an area I need to work on more.

Om Shanti

I have to stretch for sport and there is one specific exercise, which I really dislike doing. Is there anything to do about it?

I mean the one when I put both of the legs straight in front of me and put the hands over the toes as far as possible.

You can look into a thing called loaded stretching, standing on a bench or a couple of boxes and holding a heavy object, like a 5 or 10 KG plate. Also something that would work in harmony with that is the Jefferson Curl, watch some videos and talk to your trainer about these kinds of strengthening and stretching exercises.
Stay strong :)

Om Shanti

Don’t stretch to the point of pain... but really the answer is keep trying. Eventually, you’ll loosen up.

OMG
