How to plan an EPIC motorcycle trip: European Tour on a Harley!

Welcome to Dandy Rides – a Scandinavian Harley-Davidson motovlog that celebrates the thrill of riding and the freedom of the open road.

This is my first post on Steemit, my first post as a motovlogger, and – hopefully – only the humble beginnings of something amazing.

For 2018, I am planning an epic tour of Europe. I’ll be going from Denmark all the way to Lisbon, Portugal on my Harley-Davidson Sportster Forty-Eight. That’s about 3000 kilometers or 1850 miles! Then, I’ll be following the Spanish and French coast all the way up to the Côte d’Azur before heading north and back home.

You can be part of this, as I’ll be motovlogging from the whole journey. Look forward to seeing the roads I travel, the places I go and the people I meet.

Do you have any tips for planning long motorcycle trips? What to do and what to avoid?

This is going to be my first time spending several weeks on two wheels, so I’d love to hear from you. Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

How is your experience with batteries for Harley (Sportster)? My Motobatt just went down after little more than a year. Still trying to reanimate it but no success so far.

So far, I have been happy with the stock battery on my Sportster Forty-Eight. The bike was bought new in August this year. However, as I have a satellite tracker on the bike, this uses up some of the battery. It is not a problem as long as I ride at least every other week. If I know I will not be using the bike for longer periods of time, I hook the battery up to a charging station made for motorcycle batteries. This monitors the battery status and charges as necessary.

Sure, I also disconnect mine in those cases. Nevertheless, the Motobatt I mentioned is gone now. It still had 12,4V but not enough power to start the bike. Probably due to some issues a couple of months ago: one of the contacts had burned and melted which obviously caused internal problems for the battery. In case you will get a Motobatt battery at one point in the future be aware: the contacts need to be installed manually and have to be very tight. Otherwise they might burn the battery.
