I don't know if this will land as an analogy, but I'd assume most people don't blame Kurt Russel for the damage and would recognize two salient facts:

  1. Any prop guitar on set would have been made to look exactly like (or as close to) the antique guitar as possible, so a layperson would not likely be able to tell the difference at a glance. This fact explains the ease with which someone like Russel - doing his job as an actor, staying in the moment and in character - might think it was okay to destroy the guitar.

  2. The prop master and/or members of the props team are responsible for props on loan and need to communicate to everyone on set (director, actors, and crew) that they're handing over a prop that cannot be misused.

The blame for damages goes to the props team and production for giving Russel a guitar that he thought was a replica and failing to do their job in ensuring he knew he was holding the real item, not to Russel, who was just doing his job as an actor playing the scene.

We can all see that he was handed the wrong thing and that mistake resulted in him accidentally smashing the real guitar instead of a fake one. We can also all see that a sufficiently crafted fake would not have been distinguishable (by Russel, in the moment) from the real guitar, so the experts and craftspeople who were responsible for the real and fake guitars on set needed to be more careful.

Now........................ Let's talk about Rust and Alec Baldwin.
