Many people dream about escaping the big city and living quietly somewhere in the countryside. The Dandy family had this dream as well. In the early 70s, Clara and Phil Dandy moved with their children from New York to an idyllic farmhouse in Hinsdale. A serious mistake …
The haunting begins
Phil Dandy was able to buy the farmhouse very cheaply. He did not know that the previous owner had moved out because he felt threatened by the paranormal activities in the house. The paranormal activities not only occurred in the house, also in the surrounding forests it is said to haunt. Nobody knows how the demons got into the Hinsdale House. Possibly one of the residents experimented with occult practices. Things like “Ask the glass” and using Ouija boards were very popular in the 1970's.
Shortly after the Dandys moved in, they heard some weird stories about the house, but they did not believe in ghosts and thought the stories were myths. But just a few days after moving in, the phone started ringing for no reason. This happened at any time of day or night. If somebody picked up the phone, no one answered. The family thought it was a joke. Until they heard eerie songs from the woods. They could not understand a single word, but felt directly threatened.
Later, the haunting manifested itself. Each of the four family members saw a woman in white clothes sneaking through the corridors and rooms. Nobody knew anything about this woman, but she radiated something profoundly evil.
There are also reports of a being, a cross between human and animal, seen in different rooms. The family was on the verge of losing their minds, imagining itself in a bad nightmare. One night, Clara Dandy woke up and saw countless ghosts staring into the house from outside through the window.
Attacks from the hereafter
After this experience, the spirits began to become violent. The chandelier in the living room was flung to the floor by an invisible hand and hit almost one of the children. The shower curtain tried to strangle Clara Dandy.
The family was so haunted, that they called in Father Alphonsus from St. Bonaventure University to perform an exorcism on the house. Several ghost-hunter teams measured the strongest paranormal activity ever seen at Hinsdale House.
Everything seemed to be fine for a few days after the exorcism, but it was not a lasting peace. The paranormal activity returned stronger than ever before. Perhaps, the demons were furious because the family had tried to drive them out.
Drawn by fear of death, the family gave up the house and moved back to New York.
What happened next
After these terrible events, the house stood empty for a long time. The Dandy family had never tried to bring their story to the media or to make money with it. They only told their closest relatives about their experiences.
Only by chance, the ghost hunter Daniel Klaes discovered the Hinsdale House and the stories associated with it in 2000. He decided to restore the building and make it a research facility for ghost hunters.
Now, the Hinsdale House is no longer a family home, but a very popular place for paranormal investigators from around the world who want experience the horror first hand. The ghosts and demons are still there.
For all who dare
Interested visitors, as well as paranormal investigation teams are able to book a tour or investigtion, including overnight stays. There are public ghost hunts, sometimes including special guests of popular TV shows. The adress of the Hinsdale House is 3830 McMahon Rd, Hinsdale, NY 14743.
