Last week I found myself in one of the most incredibly beautiful and remote places that I've ever come across. It took an exhaustive 10 mile hike down into the Grand Canyon just to arrive to the most remote town in the United States... Havasupai. Then another two mile jaunt down stream to our first campsite and a massively impressive site--HAVASU FALLS. If you are looking for a place to forget about the fast paced, digital world we live in today then look no further than Havasupai Falls.
Though, let it be known that this is a land where mail and perishables are still both delivered via mule. In the spirit and vain of burning man and the principle of "leaving No Trace" Be prepared to lug (hump in) all of your own food and bring out your own trash... This is not "Glamping." MRE and Dried fruit are the way to go and snacking throughout the days. If you are craving a Supai Taco or burrito on Frye bread it can be had for the meager price of $12 you want to hoof it 2 miles uphill to the nearest spot in the canyon that will provide you with such. Though, I have to say, the bread is next level.
You can spend your day wallowing and wading through the rivers and exploring Mooney and cliff diving off of Beaver Falls... Or you can tempt fate by checking out some of the abandoned crystal mines and maybe lucky enough to find some selenite or creep yourself out by shutting off your lights while 200 yards into a mine. Not the best move. On the valley floor of the Grand Canyon enjoy almost scorching heat in the day and near perfect temperature at night, The limestone rich waters of the falls are sure to keep you cool, and will likely be the only bathing you will do, so don't forget the Dr. bronners (biodegradable soap). It's a must that you make sure your feat are taken care with proper wool socks, proper "broken-in" hiking shoes, water shoes, gold bond, sunscreen, headlamps and a proper hiking pack, otherwise you may be squealing like a pig, half-way into your hike. Be prepared for 40 miles of hiking over the course of a three day trip. And Remember, you still have to come back out.. Unless of course, you opt for the helicopter lift, which I attest is lovely escape... Especially jamming the Cliff drive Thelma and Louise song as you Elevate.
The tricky part. Permits for the year go on sale on Feb 2nd, and sell out within the day...yes, the day. Its like a frenzy to buy the lastet IPO for snap chat or scoop of LiteCoin...You will inevitably experience a site crash or busy signal. But man oh man, its worth it. I recommend boosting your wifi (apple store) or having multiple people call and reserve the $50 per day permit.
For those reading this, I challenge you to take a chance and go discover for yourself ! Truly the weekend of a lifetime, your soul will thank you and your body will... well, it will need some recovery time.
Amazing photos! Bet it looks even more stunning in person.
