If you've ever been to Hawaii you know that barbecue means teriyaki, a shoyu-sugar based sauce, not the tomato based sauce one typically finds on the continental US. The first time my father ordered barbecue on one of his many business trips to the contiguous 48, he was shocked to find tomato sauce instead of teriyaki on his dish. Wrong order, he might have thought, lol.
Teriyaki sauce is simple to make: shoyu (soy sauce), sugar and the optional additions of grated ginger and green onion. Add sesame seed oil and you have Korean-style marinade for kalbi.
While it's easy enough to make, I find my favorite and even easier (and more delicious than I can make it) way to make teriyaki chicken, beef or pork is to use Mr Yoshida's Original Gourmet Marinade & Cooking sauce. It's carried in supermarkets, Costco, and I think also Sam's Club on Oahu.
Here's a retail locator provided by Mr Yoshida's: http://www.mryoshidas.com/Products/Original%20Gourmet%20Sauce%20Sweet%20and%20Savory_17oz
It also comes in a large size at Costco and maybe Sam's Club (in Hawaii):
And then you go to the Carolinas and they use a mustard-based BBQ sauce. All are good, though I so like my Teriyaki

Mustard-based BBQ sauce sounds interesting. I'll take a look around the internet for more information on it. I do like mustard :P and may have to add that version to my cooking repertoire ;)
