The Adam's apple is considered as a secondary sexual characteristics in males that occur as a result of hormonal activity when attaining the age puberty. Although, not all men experience this change, few females can also experience this.

How is the Adam's apple formed and what is there in?
We all know during pubertal changes, the development of bones and muscles in men, widening of hip in females due to storing of fat, growth of hair in pubic region and face. But what exactly is the Adam's apple made of and what effect does it have to its owner.

During puberty, the thyroid cartilage grows together with the larynx there by increasing in size to form the prominence.
Cartilage are made of connective tissues that don't have blood vessels. This thyroid cartilage covers the larynx which is known as the Voice box as it protect the vocal cords which are responsible for speech. It is this cartilage that grows and widens.

Does it have any function?
Apart from defining a man as manly like the beard, the Adam's apple also has an effect. Young boys that tends to have coarse or deepened voices is as a result of the widening of the Voice box.

The Adam's apple is not a medical concern i.e either you have it or not, it possess no threat to your well-being. Some people have it surgically augmented or reduced (chondrolaryngoplasty, also known as tracheal shave) with very little or no complications.

Normally, during the stage of enlargement, the prominence might cause uneasiness. This is normal. However, if it's becomes swollen, uncomfortable or painful, inflammation of the thyroid, trachea or epiglottis might be suspected and the attention of a doctor should be sought.

the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. it produces hormones that control the speed of your metabolism -- the system that helps the body use energy. Thyroid disorders can slow down or rev up metabolism by disrupting the production of thyroid hormones.

There is this myth relating the Adam's apple to Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden. It was said that the apple that got stuck in the throat of Adam when he wanted to swallow it was a sign of the protuberance.

Adam was biblically and islamically known to be the first man created or in existence.
