Our daily routine, whether due to overwork, over-study, or overburden (from ourselves or from others), can be too harsh. In order to maintain the balance, one should allow her/himself to break such routine, appreciating the little privileges that we have. Whether it is simply being alive, or having the opportunity to study, to work... maybe just being healthy. Maybe it's a loving family or just good friends.
It is important to realize that being able to eat a delicious meal (whatever) is a temporary privilege; aging will make us all lose it; we could think in the same way about work, study, having children... everything in our life is ephemeral, and so are ourselves.
At home, my wife and I allow ourselves, every week, to have a tasty celebration (lunch, dinner, brunch... it really doesn't matter which); as simple as it may be, such is a moment to appreciate and savour our happiness. This has nothing to do with luxury - it's a matter of pacing down and caring about us: as we toast (with beer, wine, juice, water, whatever), we look deep into our eyes and give meaning to the struggles of our week.
I believe that everyone should have such little celebrations ... in any form, knowing how to focus on what is most important, what makes sense to our lives. Those are the moments that give us strength to move on, to persevere.
