We know the excessive usage of tablets and phones would damage our health in a bigger aspect. Although many people know many disadvantages of looking at these screens, they never stop it. This is happening mostly among young people, which results in many adverse health effects. Therefore, there should be some regulations that one has to adapt in order to avoid these problems in future.
A numerous number of studies are being done at various universities and health institutions to understand diverse health effects of watching screens for many hours. In this perspective, a research team in Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) studied whether there is a link between use of screens at night with the development of breast and prostate cancer. Their main aim is to check if blue light from screens could result in these cancers. Their researcher was influenced by the WHO’s classification.
"WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified night shift work as probably carcinogenic to humans. There is evidence pointing to an association between exposure to artificial light at night, disruption of the circadian rhythm, and breast and prostate cancers. With this study, we sought to determine whether night exposure to light in cities can affect the development of these two types of cancer,". Blue light is a range of the visible light spectrum emitted by most white LEDs and many tablets and phone screens.

Martin Aubé, studied this as he knows melatonin production and secretion can be decreased by artificial light at nights that depends on intensity and wavelength, especially blue light. The study was undergone with data from about 4,000 people aged between 20 and 85. There was an indoor and outdoor study that was taken in Madrid and Barcelona which was determined through nocturnal images.
Results obtained for both cities show that participants exposed to higher levels of blue light had a 1.5 and 2-fold higher risk of developing breast and prostate cancer, respectively, as compared to the less-exposed population.

Researchers want to develop this study and understand rigorously by using data of individuals, especially younger ones who use blue light emitting screens extensively. Whether or not the study proves the statement, we should keep in mind that extensive usage of screens that emit blue lights could spoil our health.
Thank you for this post. I was always concerned with wifi radiation hence I charge my phone in the bathroom and not bedroom. But now I really have to limit my usage. Hard cuz movies and phone are so addicting!

I find when I don't use my phone for hours before bed I get a lot better sleep. That is confirmed by the study you found about lesser levels of melatonin being produced by the blue light. Another thing that may cause breast or prostate cancer is the radiation from phone! Having it in your pocket all day can emit radiation to guy's groins, and girls put their phones in between their breasts (think sport's bra). This is an interesting study, and I'm glad you revealed it. Correlation does not always imply causation though.

I heard about this, and most people probably already know that using the phone, tablet etc is not good for your health, but the actual outcome of this could make it more interesting

Windows 10 has a "nightlight" setting where it will change the tone of the screen at whatever hour you set from blue to red tint which makes you sleepy.

no kidding!! i knew about the disruption of sleep, but didn't think it could cause cancer as well... scary stuff. for anyone interested there's an extension you can download on chrome called 'flux' which blocks out blue light from your computer at night.

Other than the danger of cancer, there are lots of harmful effects of these screens. If you see a persons eyes full red and bloody, you can easily understand that he looked at the screen whole night...

Unfortunately nice technology, but bad for our health. I dont use my phone much like before and keep it away for me when I go to bed. I see many parents making their children busy with mobile phones and IPads that are definitely effecting their health and thats very sad.

The documentation of blue light damage continues to increase. As you would expect, so does the research to combat it. There's a recent University of Georgia study which suggests that lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenoids, can help protect against blue light exposure. According to the trade publication Nutraceuticals World, "is the first study to examine the impact of macular carotenoids supplementation to protect visual health and performance, improve sleep quality, and reduce eye strain and fatigue during prolonged exposure to blue light emitting digital screens."
