Hormonology: ὁρμἀω

in health •  7 years ago

The word Hormone comes from the Greek ὁρμἀω meaning

"to set in motion or to stimulate"

The term hormone was used for the first time by the British physiologist Ernest Henry Starling (1886-1927)

when he defined hormone "a body as a drug of defined chemical composition: a chemical messenger that can apparently be formed by any type of tissue, a gland that it has lost its canal, or cells that at no time had a glandular structure such as nerve tissue or germinal tissue ." Like any scientist for the time, he was attacked by the rest of the physiologists who limited themselves to the concept of "substances of physiological use, secreted in the bloodstream from glandular cells"

Currently 2018 is the most successful Starling concept, where different studies have shown that the nervous system for example, secretes hormone, the gastrointestinal tract also among others.
